Pitt Startup Enters  Clinical Trial 
For Treating Macular Degeneration

 
 

Ocugenix grew out of research from the labs of Alan Wells and Cecelia Yates that produced a class of synthetic proteins that act as switches for the wound healing process. With help from Pitt colleagues, they have applied their discovery to slow and potentially reverse the fibrosis underlying age-related macular degeneration.

Investigators at the University of Pittsburgh have identified a key helical motif in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that is responsible to suppressing a key expression on cell surfaces and consequently linking to many of the symptoms of long Covid. The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S12) plays a crucial role in the ability of the virus to infect host cells but can also disrupt cellular functions. A modified polynucleotide based on this helical motif has been developed to eliminate or minimize the suppressive effects.
